The Blood Orange Espresso Tonic Obsession: The Coffee Drink We Can't Stop Ordering

    LUXE LIST· August 9, 2026

Move over, iced latte. There's a new coffee obsession bubbling up, and it's brighter, fizzier, and a lot more interesting.

The Blood Orange Espresso Tonic combines rich espresso, sparkling tonic water, and bittersweet blood orange into a drink that sits somewhere between your morning coffee and an afternoon aperitivo. It shouldn't necessarily work, but it does. The roasted bitterness of espresso meets tart citrus, subtle sweetness, and the crisp bite of tonic water, creating something refreshing without tasting like another sugary coffee drink.

    And then there's the presentation.

Slowly pour espresso over a glass filled with blood orange syrup, tonic, and ice, and the coffee floats above the citrus below, leaving a gorgeous layer of golden crema at the top. It's one of those drinks you almost don't want to stir.

    Almost.

So, Why Are We Suddenly Obsessed With Espresso Tonics?

The espresso tonic isn't actually new. The modern drink is generally traced back to Scandinavia, where coffee professionals began experimenting with espresso and tonic water in the late 2000s. From there, it slowly found its way onto specialty coffee menus around the world.

What feels new is what cafés are doing with it now.

Instead of stopping at espresso and tonic, baristas are adding blood orange, cherry, orange zest, fresh citrus, flavored syrups, botanicals, and seasonal ingredients, essentially turning the espresso tonic into its own category of coffee.

And blood orange may be one of its best iterations.

Blood orange has enough sweetness to soften espresso without completely covering it, while its tart, slightly bitter character works naturally with tonic water. The result still tastes unmistakably like coffee, just brighter.

It's coffee with a little personality.

Where to Try an Espresso Tonic

Naturally, once I became obsessed, I started paying attention to who was making them.

    Atlanta

My current favorite is Cuddlefish in Dunwoody, where the Blood Orange Espresso Tonic brings together everything I love about the drink: bright citrus, bitter espresso, bubbles, and just enough sweetness.

Part Japanese temaki bar, part specialty café, bakery, and market, Cuddlefish is already the kind of place that makes you want to venture beyond your standard coffee order. The Blood Orange Espresso Tonic fits perfectly into that experience.

Then there's PERC Coffee, another one of my Atlanta favorites and proof that the espresso tonic doesn't have to belong to just one season.

PERC rotates its version throughout the year. The Blood Orange Espresso Tonic is a winter offering, while right now they've traded blood orange for a cherry version.

And that seasonal approach might actually be part of what makes the espresso tonic so interesting.

Once you have the foundation of espresso, carbonation, ice, and something bright or fruity, the possibilities become almost endless. Blood orange in winter. Cherry in summer. Citrus zest. Grapefruit. Herbs. Different tonics. Different espresso roasts.

The espresso tonic isn't really one drink anymore.

    It's becoming an entire category.

    New York City

In New York, head underground to Voyager Espresso in the Financial District.

Tucked beneath street level at 110 William Street, Voyager serves an Espresso Tonic with double espresso, tonic water, and orange zest. Even its Golden Record espresso carries chocolate, caramel, and citrus notes, making the orange feel less like a garnish and more like an intentional extension of the coffee.

Over in SoHo, Drip Drop Café offers another reason to explore the citrus-and-coffee combination. Its menu has featured both an Espresso Tonic and an Orange Espresso, giving you two different ways to experience what happens when bright citrus meets espresso.

If blood orange is what initially converts you, Drip Drop is where I'd start experimenting with the idea beyond tonic.

    Miami

And because sparkling citrus and espresso somehow feel made for Miami, there's Soca Smart Cafe in Brickell.

Its Orange Espresso Tonic combines espresso and tonic with orange, including the option of adding a flamed orange for an extra aromatic citrus finish.

It's not exactly the blood orange version that started my obsession, but that's precisely the point.

There isn't one definitive espresso tonic.

Blood orange makes it bittersweet and complex. Fresh orange makes it juicier. Orange zest adds aroma without overwhelming the coffee. Cherry brings sweetness and depth. Even changing the tonic water can completely alter the botanical flavor and finish.

Consider this your permission to order your way through all of them.

Make the Blood Orange Espresso Tonic at Home

Of course, you don't need to wait for your favorite coffee shop to put one on the seasonal menu.

The Blood Orange Espresso Tonic is surprisingly simple to recreate at home, and the layering makes it look significantly more complicated than it actually is.

Four ingredients, one very good drink.

    Blood Orange Espresso Tonic Recipe

    Ingredients

    • 2 pumps blood orange syrup
    • 5 oz tonic water
    • 2 oz freshly brewed espresso
    • Ice

    Method

    1. Add the blood orange syrup to the bottom of your glass, then fill the glass with ice.
    2. Slowly add the tonic water, tilting the glass slightly so the tonic runs down the side rather than pouring directly over the ice. If you're using a straw, add it now to help maintain the layered look.
    3. Slowly pour the freshly brewed espresso over the top. Pouring gently helps the espresso float above the tonic while preserving the golden crema.
    4. Take a second to appreciate the layers before stirring everything together.

    Then sip.

    Bright. Bitter. Bubbly. Citrusy. Caffeinated.

Maybe the iced latte can have the summer off.
