Atlanta, Lately: More Restaurant Closures
Every time I turn around, there's a new restaurant opening. Then I turn around again… and another one's closing. It's like musical chairs, but with leases. From staples like my absolute favorite Agave quietly bowing out, to new spots popping up in places like Atlantic Station… the pace feels a little chaotic right now.
And honestly? It's not just Atlanta. Like most of the country, hospitality is in a bit of a reset. The easy money era is gone. The "just open and they'll come" mindset is gone.
And diners are… a lot more selective. People still want to go out. They just don't want to waste a night doing it. Besides the attraction of free valet and easy parking… what's left standing? The places that know you.
The ones where it's not just about the food, it's about the familiarity. Like walking into Chops Lobster Bar, and they already know who you are and make a perfect dirty martini without asking. Or posting up at Drawbar for a work-from-home day, where the burger and a ginger beer just make sense every time. Or the barista at Alon's Bakery & Market who already knows that I like my chai tea latte order with oat milk and just the right amount of cinnamon.
That's the difference right now. The middle is disappearing. You either hit… or you don't last.
If you've felt like the dining scene has been a little off lately, you're not wrong. And the places that are getting it right right now? You can feel it immediately.
Here's where are my list of favorites that are getting it this week:
